EROAD supports more than 10,000 customers and 250,000 vehicles across New Zealand, Australia and North America. Their platform helps fleets reduce safety incidents, coach drivers in the moment and build a culture of safe driving. But to influence behavior, EROAD needed one thing above all else: a highly accurate map with truck-specific elements, like speed limits, road attributes and bridge heights.
As Senior Product Manager Soumya Puri explained, “We needed a trusted partner who has a deep data set that we can easily reference and use to provide actionable and trusted insight.”
Driver coaching is only effective when drivers trust the information in front of them. A single incorrect speed limit can trigger a false overspeed event, create unsafe driving events, or damage a driver’s safety score and even affect their bonus. “Our solution is used for reward and for disciplinary reasons,” added Jason Church, Domain Chapter Lead. “There can be significant impact to drivers when the data is wrong.”
To deliver real‑time, in‑the‑moment coaching at scale, EROAD needed a mapping partner whose data was fresh, consistent and globally reliable - and whose engineering teams could help them modernize how that data reached the cab.

From the beginning of the partnership, EROAD and HERE aligned a shared goal: create safer, more efficient fleets by giving drivers the right information at the exact moment they need it.
“HERE provides us with maps designed for commercial vehicles, which is exactly what our customers need. We’re not trying to take a consumer map and enhance it to meet commercial needs,” commented Soumya.
EROAD’s in‑cab device Ehubo2 displays the current road name, road geometry and—most critically—the posted speed limit. These values come directly from HERE’s map data. When a driver exceeds the limit, EROAD’s system triggers an immediate spoken alert[em1] , creating a micro‑learning moment that helps the driver self‑correct. These learning moments typically lead to a long-term reduction in risky behavior.
In addition to events like speeding, harsh braking and sharp acceleration, bridge strikes are often attributable to driver error. A single strike can cost a fleet and the community an average of $73,900 and the number of bridge strikes in Australia has increased by 38 percent since 2018. EROAD GeoAlerts allows fleet managers to reduce the likelihood of a bridge strike by creating and configuring geofences around hazards, such as low‑clearance bridges and restricted areas.
HERE’s commitment to quality ensures that the location data consistent everywhere a customer interacts with EROAD’s products. “Our in‑cab solutions and our back‑office solutions need to be on the same reference data. We can’t have the driver experience be different to what the fleet operator is seeing in the office,” said Jason.
To support real‑time coaching, EROAD worked with HERE Professional Services to migrate from locally hosted map files—often three to four months old—to HERE’s cloud‑based platform. This gave EROAD access to fresher speed limits and more frequent updates.
“One of the main reasons for moving to the HERE platform was to provide the most up‑to‑date speed limit data,” Jason noted. “Working with HERE means we’re working with expert engineers. It makes everything more seamless.”

The impact of the partnership is most visible where it matters most: on the road, in the cab and inside fleet operations. With HERE data supporting EROAD’s platform, fleets now have a clearer, more trustworthy picture of driver performance.
“In almost all fronts, the relationship is outstanding,” said Mark Davidson, Chief Product Officer. “There's really great alignment between what we're trying to do for our customers and the value HERE brings to us.”
By evaluating driver behavior against accurate, up‑to‑date speed limits, EROAD has dramatically reduced false violations and increased trust in its safety scoring. Drivers know the alerts are reliable—and they respond to them.
“What we find is some fleets are just skipping that post trip analysis, so the in-the-moment coaching becomes super powerful,” Soumya explained. “Without these micro learning moments powered by HERE, we wouldn't be able to affect some of the positive change across the road network.”
Many fleets have seen dramatic reductions in overspeed events, and drivers themselves report greater confidence knowing the information in front of them is reliable. EROAD customer McConnell Dowell saw dramatic results with 95% fewer speed events and a reduction in safety incidents by 20%.
