NVIDIA and HERE partner on artificial intelligence for HD maps

With their sights set on a driverless future, HERE and NVIDIA are extending their collaboration to develop HERE HD Live Map into the industry-leading real-time, high-definition mapping solution for autonomous vehicles.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang delivered the news about the partnership during his opening keynote at CES 2017. This time last year, NVIDIA announced the DRIVE PX platform and their work with HERE on key innovations in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous cars. Today, we continue our work together in a collaboration that utilizes artificial intelligence technology from NVIDIA to further enhance HERE HD Live Map, HERE’s cloud service for autonomous vehicles.

As the physical world is changing all the time, self-driving cars need to be aware of the changes so they can make better decisions. Addressing precisely this need, HERE HD Live Map has been developed so it can update itself, with rich data layers assisting the vehicle in positioning, localization and strategy planning. Creating and updating a high precision, dynamic mapping asset like this of course becomes a big data challenge. Now, HERE is using NVIDIA Mapworks AI technology to help accelerate the process.

Our collaboration will also see us utilize deep learning to aid vehicle localization down to centimeter accuracy, as well as to detect how the environment around the car may differ from the current map. Demonstrations of localization utilizing HERE HD Live Map on the NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 AI computer are being showcased in the HERE booth at CES 2017, Central Plaza, #CP-2.
